About the Kichwa Añangu Community

About the kickwa comunity

The NAPO CULTURAL CENTER is the story of a dream that came true. The lodge was built and designed by the Kichwa Añangu community some years after their first and internationally award-winning project: the Napo Wildlife Center.

The Napo Cultural Center was built having the almost the same project in mind, a lodge that combined the rustic décor –typical of the local architecture— and luxury accomodation. However, what differences this hotel from any other is that it is located within the community so you can interact with its people and learn much more about their interesting and rich culture. It is a community based tourism project.

A Dream that Came True

Since 2003, when they started operations, the Napo Wildlife Center welcomes hundreds of tourist from different countries of the World. It was built with the main purpose of preserving the nature and its wildlife threaten by oil exploitation. The results have been very positive for tourism in Ecuador and for the community itself since all profits are for sustain their own people.

With this model in mind and the need to diversify visitor’s experience, the Kichwa Añangu community built some years after the Napo Cultural Center. Located within the community itself, the center facilitates the proximity of the warmis (women) and their families, chakras and children and the interaction of all these people with tourists.

Community-Based Tourism

The Kuri Muyu –this is the name of the women’s association of Añangu–are fully involved in the operation and services of the lodge. They are the main members of this community based tourism project.

The community based tourism offers visitors a full cultural experience as they are involved with the community itself, their women, children, men, chakras, etc. They will welcome you to their home and live their customs, traditions. You will feel part of the community and of course the surrounding majestic nature as it is located on the banks of the Napo River in the Yasuní National Park.
