Community-based Tourism in the Amazon

Napo Cultural Cente

The Napo Cultural Center is an ecolodge with luxury accommodations for tourist to have full comfort during their stay in the place. There are 12 spacious rooms with a private balcony from which you can relax and enjoy the surrounding nature.

The lodge is in the middle of the Kichwa Añangu community so next to it is the children school and the health center. You can see women taking kids to school and see by yourself all the interior of the Añangu local community and how it works.

Cultural Activities of the Center


There are many activities and attractions to do at this community-based tourism project Ecolodge including forest excursions and canoe riding to the rivers and streams of the Amazon Jungle and other activities for birdwatchers as visiting the parrot clay licks and the Canopy Observation Tower.

Also, there are some cultural activities for you to get immerse into the community history, customs and traditions.

  • Interpretative Centre. It this center you are welcomed by women of the community between dancing and singing and other cultural activities. There you will learn about how the community lived hundreds of years ago, their ancestral traditions and customs and different activities such as hunting and logging that were part of them. Also, you can buy some of the crafts made by the women.
  • Ancestral Catamarán Kichwa. It is one of the top activities of the lodge. It is an exciting night tour on the streams of the Napo River that aims to recreate the commercial practices of the community hundreds of years ago. You will navigate into the river, at the same time you listen to exciting stories and fables, surrounded by water, nature and a concert of mysterious sounds of the night in the jungle.
